How to use this tool

  • Choose one unencrypted standard XLSX workbook and select Inspect workbook.
  • Review each name and its workbook or sheet scope. Reported sheet indexes start at zero in original tab order.
  • Download defined-names.json. A #REF! flag indicates that literal text appears in the expression; review its meaning in your spreadsheet application.

Examples

A workbook-scoped Amounts name and a sheet-scoped Amounts name are separate declarations with their original expressions.

Limitations

  • Up to 20 MiB input, 50 tabs, 10,000 defined names and 64 MiB expanded package. Inspected XML parts: 8 MiB and 200,000 nodes; output: 20 MiB; processing deadline: 60 seconds.
  • Names are limited to 255 characters and expressions to 32,767 characters. Duplicate names in the same scope and invalid scope indexes are rejected.
  • Expressions are neither evaluated nor resolved. No formula recalculation, range expansion or source modification occurs.
  • Standard Transitional XLSX only; encrypted, macro, digitally signed, embedded-object and external-workbook-link packages are rejected.
