How to use this tool

  • Choose one TAR or supported compressed TAR archive. The format is detected from bytes.
  • Process the archive, then download ZIP. For XZ, BZip2 or Zstandard, review the separate conversion report for integrity-check information.
  • Cancel stops decoding and Reset clears input and results.

Examples

Limitations

  • 20 MiB input, 1,000 entries and 16 MiB per entry. The complete decoded TAR, including headers, padding and contents, must fit 64 MiB.
  • USTAR regular files and directories only. Links, special files, PAX/GNU extensions, unsafe names, duplicates and case-colliding names are rejected. XZ/BZip2/Zstandard additionally reject Unicode compatibility/case-fold aliases. Nested archives remain unopened.
  • XZ/BZip2/Zstandard accept one stream/frame with complete input consumption. Concatenated streams, trailing bytes (including extra XZ stream padding), Zstandard skippable frames and external dictionaries are unsupported. XZ decoder memory and Zstandard windows are limited to 64 MiB.
  • Encoded compressed-content checksums are verified. Some XZ and Zstandard files contain no data checksum; this is stated in the report. TAR header checks and decompression success do not authenticate file contents. No password guessing or encrypted-archive decoding is offered.
  • XZ/BZip2/Zstandard load a pinned, hash-verified source-built decoder with a 256 MiB native heap and a 120-second job limit; other JavaScript/browser memory is separate. Existing TAR/GZIP processing has a 30-second worker limit. Input files remain local.
  • Names and file bytes are preserved. Permissions, timestamps, ownership and other archive metadata are omitted. Compression can increase file size.
