How to use this tool
- Choose one unencrypted PDF.
- Enter a JSON array of ranges with page, style, prefix and start. Use increasing one-based physical page numbers and begin at page 1.
- Use D for decimal, r or R for Roman, a or A for alphabetic, or none for a prefix-only label. Each range continues until the next range.
- Select Set page labels, download page-labels.pdf and inspect its navigation labels in a supporting PDF reader.
Examples
[{"page":1,"style":"r","prefix":"","start":1},{"page":3,"style":"D","prefix":"S-","start":7}] gives i, ii, S-7, S-8 on a four-page PDF.
Limitations
- One PDF up to 50 MiB, 500 pages and 100,000 parsed objects; at most 500 ranges and 100,000 characters of JSON settings. Prefixes: 200 UTF-16 code units of valid Unicode without controls; starting numbers: 1–10,000. Output: 100 MiB; deadline: 120 seconds.
- Existing logical labels are replaced. No visible page-number stamps are drawn and page order is unchanged. PDF reader support varies.
- Digitally signed PDFs, unsafe actions and unsupported preservation features are rejected rather than stripped. Forms requiring appearance regeneration must first be saved in a PDF application.
- Ranges must be unique and increasing, begin at physical page 1 and remain within the document. Prefix-only style ignores the number when displaying the label.
