Markdown YAML Front Matter Extractor

Separate an initial YAML front matter mapping from Markdown and download metadata JSON plus the remaining body.

Markdown with YAML front matter, UTF-8 Markdown or text file

Markdown body, JSON metadata

Browser only

Runs locally in your browser. Your files, pasted content and generated output are not uploaded. Reset clears this tool’s working data.

This tool needs JavaScript. If it does not load, refresh the page and try again.

How to use this tool

  • Paste Markdown or choose a UTF-8 file; a selected file takes precedence.
  • Front matter must begin with an exact --- line, optionally after one UTF-8 BOM, and end at the next exact --- line.
  • Select Extract front matter and inspect the found or absent status.
  • Download body.md and front-matter.json.

Examples

An opening block containing title: "Example" and count: 2 becomes {"title":"Example","count":2}; the Markdown after its closing delimiter becomes body.md.

Limitations

  • Up to 5 MiB input, 256 KiB front matter, 200,000 values, 40 nesting levels and 20 MiB combined downloads.
  • Accepts the strict YAML 1.2 JSON-compatible mapping subset. Duplicate keys, aliases, merge keys and custom tags are rejected. TOML is not supported.
  • An initial delimiter without a closing delimiter is an error. No initial delimiter returns the complete unchanged body and empty metadata with an explicit absent status.
  • The body starts after the closing line terminator. Uploaded files preserve original body line endings; pasted textarea line endings normalize to LF. YAML comments and presentation are not preserved in the metadata JSON.
